The Penguins held Day 3 of Training Camp at the CEC today.
Here was the schedule for today's events:
9 a.m. - Group C practices
10 a.m. - Group C and Group A scrimmage
11 a.m. - Group A practices
12 noon - Group B practices
Same lines for Group C as the past two days, with Comrie centering Malkin and Tangradi. The scrimmage for today puts Crosby's Group A against Malkin's Group B.
The Scrimmage (Group A vs. Group B):
Group C won the scrimmage 2-1 off of a dazzling performance from prospect Brett Sterling, tallying 2 goals. Group A's goal was scored by 2009 1st Rd draft pick, Simon Despres on a penalty shot with a wrist shot under the glove.
And now for something completely different:
The Standouts:
Brett Sterling: It shouldn't be a surprise that he made the list today. 2 goals in the scrimmage against Crosby's Group A definitely deserves notice. I haven't been impressed with him over the first two days of camp, but it looks like him and Kevin Veilleux developed a good deal of chemistry and Sterling just broke out today. I still don't believe that Sterling has a legitimate shot at the NHL roster come opening night, but that doesn't mean he won't be in position to gain a call-up should an injury occur, if he keeps playing like he did today.
Paul Martin: He was paired with Kris Letang again today and looked great throughout the scrimmage. He was able to get his shot through a couple of times and made some great passes to get out of the zone. I really believe that Penguins fans won't miss Gonchar as much as some believe they will. Martin is a more than capable replacement and he's coming from a defense-first team and will be getting top pairing minutes and top pp time.
Tyler Kennedy: I though he looked much better today. He was getting to the puck and even got some scoring chances while playing a shift with Malkin and Tangradi.
Corey Potter: I liked what he brought today. He seems to always be in good position defensively and works well with his stick, knocking the puck away multiple times.
They've Seen Better Days:
Brad Thiessen: He got beat twice in the scrimmage and didn't look that great during drills either. He's looked fine the last few days, so I'm guessing this might just be an off day for him.
Mike Comrie: You have to hit the empty net! Comrie missed an empty net chance at the end of scrimmage.
Other Notes:
- Casey Pierre-Zabotel will be injured for the next 3-4 weeks with a broken finger, which happened on Sunday's practice.
- Malkin, Crosby, and Orpik will participate in the opening preseason game of the CEC on Wednesday, September 22, vs the Red Wings
